Highway Robbery

Posted by comfortablycrazy on August 14, 2005

Having to price car insurance is not a fun thing. I’m used to paying $80.00 a month for six months to insure two, not one, two vehicles for a year. Out here they want $145.00 a month for six months to insure ONE vehicle for a year. It’s outrageous.

I know why it’s so high, but it’s still not fair. California is considered a “no fault” state. Which means that even if you weren’t at fault your rates may go up. I’ve requested rates at a couple of different sites. Hopefully one of them will be a little more reasonable. But I really doubt it.

The other thing that seems way to high is rent. I found a two bedroom, two bath, duplex style place with a garage foe $910 a month, plus a $25 “pet rent” fee. It has a breakfast bar, a fireplace, ceiling fans, w/d hookups, and a dishwasher in the unit. And a pool on the premises. Plus it’s close to Rapunzel’s school. Or we could rent a three bedroom up-stairs apartment for a little more, or a two bedroom for the same price.

I know that’s not really a bad price. But last time we rented a place for $450 a month that was the same size as the house we’re selling. I can’t imagine what prices are like in the city. We’re looking in the “city” but it’s still in BFE to some people. Hopefully we’ll find something that’s really out there for a good price. And by really out there I mean on a dirt road.

Who knows. The right place will be available when the time is right.

The Count Down

Posted by comfortablycrazy on August 12, 2005

Well, the count down has officially begun. Shawn is planning on leaving Illinois for California on next Tuesday. Yep. That’s right, only four more days until he plans on leaving. Which means he could be here in less than a week. Yay. I can’t wait.

The house is in escrow and we’re crossing our fingers that everything will go smoothly.

Shawn is finally getting his EMG test done to see how severe his carpal tunnel syndrome is. So hopefully we’ll receive some payments soon.

I had my interview this week. It was very odd. I was completely overdressed, but I knew that when I went in. The office is very casual. The dress code is no bare midriffs or spaghetti straps.

I have the job, but I don’t have a start date yet. Which to some would mean they’d look somewhere else. But I’m not because I already know the office manager and I’ll be working with my mom. Plus day care is provided, and it’s in the same building. Which means that I’ll get to have lunch with SuperChunk everyday. I’m really looking forward to working.

I’ll finally be able to feel like more than Rapunzel’s and SuperChunk’s mommy. Plus once Shawn is able to go back to work I’ll be able to back to school part time. I never thought that I’d really, really, really want to go back to school. But after eight years school just doesn’t seem that scary anymore.

Speaking of school. Here is a great site to get some info on schoools in your area. Rapunzel started 2nd grade today. She missed the first four days of school because I found out on Tuesday that school started on Monday. So on Wednesday I got the papers to enroll her, and I turned them in on Thursday.

So today she got to ride the bus to school. She woke up at 7 a.m. and got dressed, brushed her hair and teeth, and ran into the livingroom telling me she was ready to go. The only time I could tell she was nervous was at the bus stop. She wouldn’t talk to any of the kids.

When I told my mom this Rapunzel said that she was too shy. My mom’s reply was, “TOO SHY!!!” And then there was a lot of laughter. She did make one friend in her class though. A girl named Summer. I had to laugh at that, because I wanted to name her Autumn when she was born. How funny would that have been. To have a Summer and Autumn in the same class.

Well. I now have a little more reliable access to the internet, which means that I should be able to update more frequently. Which makes me feel a little better. I tried writing in a journal, but it just didn’t work. Just about every notebook I have the girls confiscate. But the more I write the better I’ll feel. So I’m going to make myself write more often. I just need to get into a routine.
